Sightseeing in Lunigiana

This area, belonging in part to Tuscany and in part to Liguria, is rich in mediaeval history: castles, Romanesque churches and ancient villages of extraordinary beauty.
The Lunigiana cuisine is well known. Several restaurants and 'trattorie' have maintained the old culinary traditions, based on mushrooms, sausages, quiches and the 'testaroli'.

FOSDINOVO (23 km ca.)
Visit of Fosdinovo's castle, Villa of Caniparola and Resistenza Museum.

AULLA - VILLAFRANCA - PODENZANA (40 km ca.)
Aulla: The Natural History Museum is open between April to September. .
Villafranca: The Ethnographic Museum is open between June and September. 
Podenzana: Visit of the most famous sanctuary of Lunigiana. Between 5th and 15th of August there is a gastronomic feast of panigaccio: typical product of the old culinary tradition.

PONTREMOLI - FILETTO (50 km ca.)
Pontremoli: visit the historical centre and the church of S. Annunziata.

Art cities in Tuscany

FLORENCE (100 km ca.)
Florence is famous all over the world for its artistic beauty. It was for many years the home of art and culture. Florence guide.

How to reach Florence:

  • by car (1 hour): A11 Highway. 
    There are various car parks in the outskirts of the city.
    In the centre it's quite easy to get around on foot or by bus
    .
  • by train (1,5 hour): Santa Maria Novella Railway Station is right in the heart of the city.
  • by bus: the "APT" (Local Tourist Office) in Marina di Massa will be able to give you all the information you might require.

LUCCA (5 (50 km ca.)
Apart from the city itself enclosed by the city wall which surrounds it, the Villas along the road which takes you to Abetone are worthy of a visit.

How to reach Lucca:

  • by car. There are numerous car parks located outside the Walls and in the historical centre one can easily get around on foot.
  • by train. Lucca Railway Station is in front of the Walls and one can get into the historical centre through St. Pietro's Gate.
  • by organized bus tours. The 'APT' (Local Tourist Office) in Marina di Massa will give you all the information you might require).

SIENA (180 km ca.)
Siena is situated in the center of Tuscany between the Chianti area and Maremma, rich in history, art and popular traditions.
The Palio of Siena is the most important popular feast that occurs in July 2 & August 16 of every year

How to reach Siena:

  • by car (2 hours): Take the A11 Highway to Florence, then take the A1 in the direction of Rome and exit at Firenze Certosa, and then take the freeway Firenze- Siena.
  • by train (2 hours): take the Firenze - Empoli - Siena line, or the Pisa - Empoli - Siena line

Sightseeing in Liguria

CINQUE TERRE (40 km ca.)
Cinque Terre, five villages like five jewels: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, with brightly-coloured houses, steps descending steeply to the sea, roads carved through the rocks such as "via dell'Amore" ("the path of Love") between Riomaggiore and Manarola.

How to reach Cinque Terre:

  • by railway: from La Spezia in few minutes,
  • by boat: from Lerici, Portovenere or Marina di Massa.

Hot to reach Genoa:
